What Was Yesterday by the German band My Secret Island is a hard-hitting, post apocalyptic story of Earth in the year 2031. It reveals a bleak new reality after waves of destruction brought about by human beings themselves.
The videography in this video is great. The use of black and white scenes and the sepia-look to other scenes adds to the eerie quality for which the band and directors were looking. The zombies look incredible. And the couple who are in charge over the laboratory are great additions: the husband, a mad-scientist sort of SteamPunk character, and the wife, a alluring, chain smoking beauty are in control of all, it seems. The Wife, however, has ultimate control over the men, human zombie alike. The video is great in itself, with a written in introduction that sets up the whole scene. What is great about it is that it conjures up so many scenes and scenarios in the imagination.
While the video is great, the German band My Secret Island, that is behind the video is high-energy and a great listen. For older listeners or those into classic rock as well as alternative rock, there is something familiar in the lead singer's voice. His voice is a bit reminiscent of Geddy Lee, the former front man for Rush. With that being said, the front man for this band also have a unique style all his own. After one listen, the chorus replayed in my head as I moved on to other tasks in my day. The song and the video make a great combination - unlike some other music where production company who made the video seem to have never met the recording artists. It is a solid song and a great story. While this song will always conjure images of post-apocalyptic Earth with zombies roaming the woods for me, the refrain, "Where have those days gone," goes deeper than that. Many of us wonder where our yesterdays have gone and how things have changed so much.
Overall this is not only a great song with an awesome video, but the band itself also could quickly become a favorite. I would definitely recommend checking out What Was Yesterday by My Secret Island on YouTube!
